Summer tips for electronic devices: Avoid moisture damage

Summer is the right time to travel, explore, and spend more time outdoors, but can also be a risk that is at risk for your electronics. One threat that is often ignored during warm months is moisture damage caused by sudden changes in temperature.

In the lab, we see this problem more often than you think, especially with smartphones, laptops, and other portable devices.

This is what you need to know so that your technology is safe and dry this summer!

Why changes in temperature are important

When you move the device from a cold and air-conditioned environment to the hot and humid one, or vice versa, condensation can form on the device. Think about what happens when you drink cold outside on a hot day.

The same accumulation of humidity can occur in your cellphone or laptop if you experience a rapid shift in temperature.

Even if you don’t see moisture on the surface, condensation in your device can cause:

  • Short circuit
  • Internal component corrosion
  • Fogging or screen color changes
  • Permanent hardware failure

General situation that endangers the device

You may not realize how often your device has experienced this sudden change. Some common examples include:

  • Take your phone from air-conditioned cars or build into hot summer air
  • Using a poolside laptop after storing in a cool room
  • Storing electronics in the cold trunk and use it immediately in a hot climate

How to prevent moisture damage

The good news is moisture damage due to temperature shift can be avoided with some simple precautions:

Let the device adjust gradually

If your cellphone or laptop is in a cool room, give 10 to 15 minutes to warm up to room temperature before using it in a hot environment.

Use a protective casing or arm

Isolated arms help moderate changes in temperature and reduce humidity exposure.

Avoid using electronics immediately

After a large change in temperature, turning on the device when condensation is present can increase the risk of internal damage.

Avoid direct sun

Don’t leave your cellphone or device in a hot car or direct sunlight. The heat is risky, but combined with humidity, it can quickly cause a buildup of moisture.

Use the silica gel package while traveling

Stir some of your bags or laptops to absorb excess moisture during the temperature transition.

If your device shows signs of humidity damage:

  • Turn off immediately
  • Don’t plug it or try to charge
  • Dry the surface gently and let it rest in a cool and dry place
  • Take it to the lab for professional inspection

The sooner we can see, the better the opportunities we have to prevent long -term damage.

Protect your technology throughout the season

Your device is part of your daily life, so don’t let the temperature swing out of the commission. Either you travel, work remotely, or relax at home this summer, remember the damage to moisture.
